Hidden Heroes

Today I read an eye-opening article by TIME about what it is like for cleaning professionals working during Covid-19. Working long hours for low wages in contagious areas, I would like us to take a moment to thank the brave souls working during our current pandemic. It is a scary time to be at work, making yourself vulnerable to such an unknown virus. Every day we see amazing posts and thanks given to our men and women on the front lines, from doctors to nurses, EMT’s and police, but rarely do we think about our sanitation professionals. So here is to our brave janitors and cleaning professionals, the ones that surround themselves every day around the potentially most contiguous items we all fight to avoid. You take the time to make sure each area is cleaned and sanitized for our safety. You work day and night to do your part in helping halt the spread of virus and disease and you do it all without being seen.

Janitorial staff are for the most part some of the most underpaid staff on a roster. They work in the dirtiest, smelliest, and not to mention the most unsafe situations and they do it without the thanks they deserve. How many of us as employers take the time to thank our cleaning staff for keeping our business clean and sterile, ensuring our consumers stay safe and happy and for keeping our equipment maintained. How many of us have walked into a gross bathroom, a mess of a kitchen, or the after math of an incident in a hospital, probably all of us. Now, how often have you stopped to think or thank those that will enter these areas after us and make sure that it all gets cleaned up, sanitized, and once more made safe to enter. I want us all to take a moment to thank those hidden heroes. Thank you for making sure the hospital bed I lay in is free of germs, that the food I eat is prepared in a sanitized area and that the mysteries of what happened to that bathroom before I entered, stay exactly that, a mystery. Thank you for keeping us all safe. We applaud you and the work you do. #hiddenheroes

  1. Thank you for sharing this brilliant article and helping bring visibility to these hidden heroes. It’s a very timely post. I believe that janitorial and cleaning professionals are constantly undervalued, especially at times like these. Have you had experiences working with the sanitation and cleaning under these new guidelines?

  2. Hi there-
I like that this post is relating to the current events around us- it really does show that right now especially we need to be applauding those who are working hard. Sanitization services are keeping us healthier and less likely to catch the virus. Everyone that is out working right now deserves an extra thank you!

  3. This blog was an eye opener! I mean I know that I think about those who may need to clean up the dirtiest places that we could go into. I use to work at a Rite Aid and let me tell you that the restrooms there would not be a pretty sight at times but guess who had to clean it up? Us employees! We didn’t have a special crew to come in and take care of it. I wouldn’t want to be a janitor during this pandemic! I would have to make sure I had all the correct gear for doing this specific task. Thank you for taking time to write about this.
